Bucking
the trend of contemporary Christian music hasn’t
always been easy, but radio station WATS 1600 AM
is still going strong after twenty years of playing
the “golden oldies” of Isaac Watts all day,
every day. Hymn jockey Dwayne “Wolfman”
Caswell (shown above) says that spinning Watts’
psalmic vibes has been very edifying, but not
without its controversy. “Listenership went
down after the nasty rumor that Isaac had
divorced his wife so he could marry Vince Gill,”
Caswell related. “But when we explained that
Watts had been dead for 250 years, things
finally settled down. Still, if we play Psalm 75
before Psalm 74, the switchboard sure lights up….
well, our one phone starts ringing anyway.”
Caswell’s favorite Watts’ tune? “The
119th.
It gives me enough time to go to the bathroom
and get back before I have to announce the next
record. Especially after lunch at Chipotle.”
